About Depression
Depression is characterised by low mood and an aversion to activity. A depressed mood is not necessarily indicative of mental illness, particularly in the face of major negative life events i.e. bereavement, divorce, or catastrophic injury etc. However, many of those suffering from depression have an underlying mood disorder, such as major depressive disorder. Depressive mood can also be inducted by more exogenous factors, such as physical illness or psychoactive substances.
